The Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) has entered into an agreement with the Lagos State Government, facilitated by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, to construct waste treatment facilities in Lagos, Nigeria.
This ground breaking initiative aims to revolutionize the environmental landscape of Africa’s most populous city, addressing pressing waste management challenges and fostering sustainability.
The formalization of this landmark agreement took place through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Jospong Group of Companies, represented by its Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and the Honourable Commissioner of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, in Lagos on Monday, February 26, 2024.
Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong underscored the company’s commitment to supporting Lagos State and sharing expertise in waste management and treatment. He emphasized the importance of leveraging lessons learned from Ghana to enhance the sanitation landscape of Lagos State.
Furthermore, Dr. Agyepong assured upstream operators in Lagos of collaboration and support, including equipment provision, to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of their operations.
Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, highlighted the state’s dedication to addressing waste management challenges through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework. He emphasized the importance of converting waste into valuable resources and fostering a conducive environment for private sector participation to achieve a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Lagos.
The Consul General of the Ghana Consulate in Lagos, HE Hajia Samata Gifty Bukari, expressed support for the partnership between Jospong Group and the Lagos State Environment and Water Resources, underscoring her commitment to ensuring its success.
Per the MoU, Jospong Group will implement various initiatives, including establishing Material Recovery Facilities, Mobile Transfer loading stations, and recycling plants, to streamline recyclable activities and contribute to environmental sustainability.
This collaboration does not only address immediate waste management challenges in Lagos but also contributes to Nigeria’s carbon ratings, enabling the country to access funding for sustainable infrastructure development.
The delegation from Jospong Group included key executives and board members, demonstrating the company’s dedication to fostering impactful partnerships and driving positive change. Similarly, the Nigerian delegation, led by the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, comprised high-ranking officials and industry stakeholders committed to advancing environmental sustainability efforts in Lagos.
It was a sun-kissed hazy day in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 2023, during the 28thClimate Change Conference held at the Expo City. The venue was the Ghana Pavilion and the entire leadership and workforce of the Jospong Group had every reason to be proud.
This was the day that saw representatives of the Swiss Government, led by His Excellency Ambassador Felix Wertli of the Swiss Federal Office for Environment (BAFU) and representatives of the Jospong Group, led by visionary Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, sign an authroisation document which conferred an internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcome (ITMO) credit on the Integrated Waste Recycling and Compost facilities of the Jospong Group of Companies.
The number of dignitaries, who witnessed the historic occasion, was awesome. It included no less a personality than His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana; Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Dr. Freda Prempeh, Minister of Water and Sanitation, as well as representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana.
The ITMO status covers four out of the 38 waste treatment plants belonging to Zoomlion Ghana, a subsidiary of Jospong Group, which were selected for the initial phase of the project aiming to generate approximately 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide valued at US$20 million from now until 2030.
For His Excellency Ambassador Felix Wertli of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU), the signing of the document was of great significance to the Swiss government in pursuit of reducing carbon emissions to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
He highlighted the mutually beneficial nature of the agreement, with Ghana reducing emissions and enhancing waste management while Switzerland advances its climate goals. He also expressed Switzerland’s eagerness to continue strengthening its relationship with Ghana in these endeavours.
Dr. Agyepong, on his part, said the world has now gone green, and as such, about 1,000 of Zoomlion’s diesel waste trucks are undergoing conversion into electric vehicles in partnership ZeroNox in the USA. He announced the company’s plans for extensive climate-related research in 2024, adding that the Jospong Group intends to sponsor a number of individuals in climate studies.
Jospong Group & Swiss Government collaborate on carbon trading
Zoomlion’s exploits at carbon trading can be traced back to the year 2008 when it partnered the British Council of Accra to carry out a pilot project on its landfill sites.
“Everything our great Group has embarked upon has green components, says Ms. Sophia Kudjordji, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Jospong Group. “From its inception, the Jospong Group has been on a mission to foster sustainability and help build a green environment in Ghana and across the African continent. One of the standout achievements of the Group is the generation of substantial carbon credits, made possible through various innovative initiatives, Ms. Kudjordji added.
“I am aware that climate change has become the single greatest challenge facing humanity and the single biggest threat to all life on Earth, and I believe that we all in one way or the other have a role in mitigating its devasting impact on humanity,” Dr. Agyepong, stressed in an interview.
“In 2006, when by the grace of God, I caught the vision to go into waste management, my primary mission was to improve the lives of people by ensuring environmental cleanliness using simple but modern technologies. My joy was to see our streets and homes clean while providing livelihood for the teeming youth of our beloved country, Ghana,” Dr. Agyepong further said.
“We at Jospong Group fully agree that it demands urgent and concerted action from all nations including the private sector to lower emissions and reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,” he added.

“As part of our journey to this project, we developed a mitigation activity document including the technical description of the project,” added Ing. Dr Glenn Gyimah, of the African Environmental & Sanitation Consult (AFESC).
“This also encompassed the involvement of our national government, the Regulator which is the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana as well as an independent validator.
“We also developed a Municipal Solid Waste Flow analysis that can justify the quantity of emissions captured and a financial analysis to guide us. With our four plants combined up to the year 2030 we could save a carbon emission of not less than 1.6 million metric tonnes of carbon equivalent of methane,” Dr Gyimah explains further.
“Going forward, Jospong Group is setting up plants in each of the 16 regions of Ghana. We are not relenting in our efforts; we must ensure that we excel in this venture,” says Mrs. Florence Larbi, Chief Operating Officer of the Environment & Sanitation Cluster of the Jospong Group, an outfit which oversees the operations of the recycling and Composting facilities.
“It is also about appreciating the value of waste and proper waste management systems,” she said.
The 2024 version of the JOSPONG Leadership Conference — Gomoa
The Jospong Group of Companies, a prominent conglomerate in Africa, has held its 11th Leadership Conference at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, located in the Central Region. The annual conference is a significant event for the conglomerate, featuring both international and domestic speakers who shed light on the vision and focus of the company for the upcoming year.
The theme for the 2024 Leadership Conference, is ‘Driving Business Excellence through Innovation, Sustainability, and Empowerment.
The 11th edition was also to align their teams, share insights, and set goals for the future. It was also reflection of Jospong Group’s commitment to continuous improvement and adaptability in the rapidly changing business landscape. The event, which took place on Monday, was attended by participants mainly leaders and staff of the Jospong Group of Companies and their stakeholders.
Speakers at this year’s conference included the President of Day Star Christian Centre in Nigeria the Rev. Dr. Sam Adeyemi, Hon. Edward Ato Sarpong, a former deputy Minister for Communications, Prof. Gyedu of Trinity Theological Seminary, the President of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, Mr. Edward Baba Mahama, Mr. Emmanuel Anane Boate, a former banker, Mrs. Addelaide Araba Siaw Agyepong of the Asian African Consortium among others.
Opening the conference, the Executive Chairman, Dr Jospeh Siaw Agyepong expressed gratitude to God for another successful year and extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests, including the Chief Operating Officer, Dr Samanjith Udumalagala, and the CEO of Asian African Consortium, Mrs Adelaide Araba Siaw Agyepong.
Reflecting on the past 11 years of the leadership conference, Dr Agyepong highlighted the positive impact of the annual event, attributing its success to the dedication and hard work of the Group’s employees.
On sustainability, Dr Agyepong underlined the Jospong Group’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues.

Speaking on the topic ‘Empower for Greatness: Igniting Businesses,’ President of the Full Gospel Men’s Fellowship-International, Mr Baba Mahama asked business owners to simplify and define their missions to employees if they want them empowered. He said the first place to look for competition was no other place than within same organisation.
Mr Mahama was categorical that excellence could only be achieved when efficiency and effectiveness were equilibrium.
He said the first customer to an organisation was none other than its employees and their satisfaction transcends to the external customer at all times.
Hon. Dr. Freda Prempeh, the Ghanaian Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources has said Ghana recognizes the pivotal role of keeping organic waste out of landfills, reflecting the country’s commitment to mitigating climate change.
According to her, Ghana endorses the reduction of methane emission exemplified by bold steps taken to address the issues so far.
This transformative journey she said is being pursued through public private partnership in service delivery among others.
The Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Tano North constituency in the Ahafo Region was speaking at the Sanitation Day at the Ghana Pavilion during the recent Climate Change conference in Dubai’s Expo City.
“A key example is the construction of 16 Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECOPs) across the 16 regions of Ghana,” she said adding,
“When completed and operational, it will divert 35% of wastes from Landfill sites while recovering recyclables such as plastics, metals, bottles etc. which will in turn lead to job creation, fostering economic growth and sustainability.”
According to Dr. Freda Prempeh, Climate investment is beginning to attract the needed Foreign Direct Investments while Ghana has become an attractive destination for sustainable development businesses.
Making reference to the signing of the agreement between Jospong Group and the Swiss government on the sidelines of the COP 28 on Carbon trading, the Minister explained that what happened between the Government of Switzerland and Jospong Group had laid the foundation stone for sustainable development in Ghana and will ensure the reduction of 1.5 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions as well as the production of 1.3 million metric tonnes of compost.
The Ministry she said will ensure the establishment of procedures and techniques for a smooth delivery while it is fully dedicated to partnering the Jospong Group in sustainability issues.
The Minister announced other efforts to decarbonize Ghana’s waste sector which include harnessing energy from the heaps of waste and embracing innovation and sustainable practices.
On his part, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong said Jospong was more than prepared to deliver on its 1.5 million metric tonnes target and asked the Ministers to use Jospong as a window on the various ongoing sustainable projects.
At the recent COP 28 meeting, world leaders were joined by civil society, business, Indigenous Peoples, youth, philanthropy, and international organizations in a spirit of shared determinationto close the gaps towards attaining climate change goals in 2030.

The meetings which involved 200 Parties met to take decisions on what they termed the world’s first ‘global stocktake’ to agree on climate action before the end of the decade – with the overall aim to keep the global temperature limit of 1.5°C.
The two-week-long conference got underway with the World Climate Action Summit, which brought together 154 Heads of States and Government with the following at the closing of the event from November 30th to December 13, 2023.
Parties reached a historic agreement on the operationalization of the loss and damage fund and funding arrangements – the first time a substantive decision was adopted on the first day of the conference. Commitments to the fund started coming in moments after the decision was received, totalling more than USD 700 million to date.
There was more progress on the loss and damage agenda with an agreement also reached that the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the UN Office for Project Services will host the secretariat of the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage. This platform will catalyze technical assistance to developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
The Jospong Group of Companies has successfully held its 2023 End of year Thanksgiving Service at the Group’s Headquarters in Ashalley Botwe, Nmai Djorn, Accra.
The weeklong Thanksgiving Service was held from Monday December 4 to Friday December 8, 2023.
In a sermon, a Guest Speaker, Apostle Kingsley Addai, of the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Kokomlemle Accra underscored the value of thanksgiving in the life of every believer.
He was full of praise for the Jospong Group in acknowledging God as the sustainable source for the business over the years.
Apostle Addai prayed for unity among Ghanaian businessmen as they contribute their quota towards the development of the nation.
On his part, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Private Services Ltd, Edwin Amoako said the Group takes advantage of the annual thanksgiving service to win souls for Christ through its street evangelism as well as educate the public on good sanitary habits.
Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong the Executive Chairman was full of praises to God for a successful year.
He also led the workers on a street evangelism with members of staff wielding placards with gospel inscriptions along some principal streets around the Group’s operational headquarters located at Nmai Djorn on the University Farm Road.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards were; “Jesus is the way, the truth and the life,” “Come to Jesus,”; “HEAVEN Is Real,”; “Jesus- Na Him Be Oga,” and “Inspite of your sins, Jesus still loves you.”
Other inscriptions read; “He is with you until the end of time,”; “Jesus is still in the miracle business,”; “Jesus Is Eveready to Help You,”
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility activities in thanksgiving to God for his unconditional mercies to the Group for the year 2023, the Executive Chairman Pledged support for dialysis patients who cannot pay their bills at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with over GHc500,000.
According to him, officials of the Group will work with authorities at the Dialysis Centre at Korle Bu in identifying patients who are financially handicapped and support them in the payment of the bills.
Dr. Agyepong prayed that the good Lord which is a God of healing to heal the sick especially the dialysis patients even as the company plays its part through the cash support for their treatment.

Two subsidiaries of the Jospong Group, Kumasi Composting and Recycling Plant (KCARP) and Dredge Masters have received two prestigious awards at the National Brands Innovation Awards.
KCARP was honoured with the prestigious Waste Management & Recycling Facility Excellence Award while Dredge Masters Limited on the other hand received the prestigious Community Impact Award of the year for its exceptional contribution to the dredging sector and the significant impact it has made in sanitizing the national water bodies.
According to RAD Communications, the awarding institution, the two subsidiaries have showed exceptional innovation in their respective fields.
The Awards ceremony took place at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel on Friday, May 26, 2023.

The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has called on the government of the Republic of Ghana to put in place measures to support local rice production.
He said government can create demand by reducing importation of rice thereby helping local producers get good market for their produce
Dr. Agyepong was speaking at a two-day Ghana Food Security Conference under the theme “Enhancing Food Security: The role of Ghanaian Scientists” at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region on May 19, 2023.
He encouraged the stakeholders particularly rice farmers and scientists not to despair because there are no adequate policies to support the initiative but rather be hopeful that when there is adequate rice production, the policies will change to favour local producers.
Dr. Agyepong paid glowing tribute to Nigeria for taking the initiative to ban rice importation, He also lauded them for their ability to feed their teeming population.
“In 2019, rice accounted for more than 14% of crops grown by Nigerian households,” Dr. Agyepong said.
He said Nigeria after banning the importation of rice has made remarkable progress in rice production over the previous decade surpassing Egypt with a yearly production of 5.8 metric tonnes of rice.
“Nigeria as a country is gradually becoming a rice super power,” Dr. Agyepong said adding, with the advent of Jospong’s support, we expect government to minimize rice importation or stop it entirely
The Chief Executive Officer of the Asian African Consortium (AAC), A subsidiary of Jospong Group, Mrs. Adelaide Araba Siaw Agyepong explained that science, research and development have traditionally been the drivers of innovation and productivity, and are central to everything done in the world.
According to her, if immediate measures to enhance food production are not undertaken, the cost of Africa’s yearly food import might rise from $50 billion to US$110 billion by 2030.
“When there is food crisis, the poor suffer the most since they are unable to obtain food due to price hikes” she noted.
She said this motivated the Jospong Group of Companies and the AAC in partnership with the CSIR to perceive the need to bridge Ghana’s food security gaps.
In a speech read on his behalf by Apostle Alexander Kumi-Larbi, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye said the theme for the conference which is “Enhancing Food Security: The Role of Ghanaian Scientists“ is crucial in the nation’s development discourse, especially at a time when the economy is distressed.
“While we await IMF assistance, it is critical that steps be taken locally to strengthen our country’s economic issues.”
He said, the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development, states that around 1.5 million Ghanaians experience food insecurity, with undernutrition, over nutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies persisting across all life stages. Poverty, climate change, rapid urbanisation and population expansion, and poor infrastructure have all been recognised as threats to food security in Ghana.
Again, he said, based on the 1996 World Food Summit, food security is defined as when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
“It is, therefore, appropriateto remind ourselves of the four main dimensions of food security which include physical food availability, economic and physical access to food, food utilization and a combination of all the three listed,” he said.
The Director General of the Council for Industrial Research (CSIR) Prof. Paul Bosu said the Council has waited for a long time for such an opportunity to collaborate with industry to promote food security.
He said the Council was ready to partner Jospong in rice production and other commodities.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Samanjith Udumalaga has commended the employees of Jospong for their hard work and dedication which has pushed the Group forward.

The Guest Speaker for the event, Wing Commander Samuel J. A Allotey urged business leaders to respect their subordinates saying, “Don’t bring people’s spirits down, don’t slow down their hope, don’t make the problem bigger that it is.”
Throwing more light on the values of the Jospong Group, Wing Commander Allotey urged business leaders to provide a helping hand to their employees, create a conducive atmosphere, and regulate themselves to avoid disciplinary issues.
“Don’t wait for policies procedures and employee manual before you understand issues, regulate yourself in the workplace.” He said.
Wing Commander Allotey who is also a Board member of the Technical Logistics Cluster of the Group also warned of the workplace becoming a hub for polarization. “It is not about tribe or party, those are transient,” he said.
He urged the leadership of the Group to motivate their teams and focus on people issues, saying people issues are key. “
Wing Commander Allotey said usually companies look out for operations and finance reports leaving people issues unattended to. He said people issues should be part of the main reports in any management review meetings.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong said the theme for this year’s employee month celebration which is “Improving the Lives of our People,” comes at a time when the Group is building the capacity of employees both home and abroad.
“This is to help equip employees to play multiple roles or acquire new skills even in a technology advancing world of work which is changing greatly the way organisations must run in order to succeed,” he said adding, “As a Group we also have the welfare of our people at heart and although we may not have been able to resolve all of our people issues across various subsidiaries, we want you to understand that we have your interests at heart and will do anything to help improve upon the lives of our employees and that of their families. “
Dr. Agyepong also congratulated employees for also always bringing new ideas to the table especially at the Jospong annual leadership conferences.

In line with its mission to improve the lives of people, a leading conglomerate in Africa, Jospong Group of Companies has constructed a 300 bed facility for young soldiers at the 37 Military Hospital.
The building which was commissioned by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo on February1, 2023 is named “Joseph Siaw Agyepong Young Soldiers Block.”
Commissioning the Block on Wednesday, the President stated that the 37 Military Hospital, usually, finds itself with a lot of young soldiers posted to the Unit to commence their basic training in medical care.
According to the President, it is for this reason that the then Director General of Health Services at the hospital, Brigadier General Ralph Ametepe, conceived and started the project in 2016.
“With the use of internally generated funds, the project stood at 40% complete in 2018 when it run out of funds and stalled.”
“It is good to note that successive Directors at the Hospital continued the project, albeit at a slow pace, until the project was revived in 2021 by the current Chief of Defence Staff,” he said.
“I am told that the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, in 2021, made an appeal to the Jospong Group of Companies to assist with the completion of this block, a request which was duly heard and answered,” the President said.
The President also paid glowing tribute to Jospong Group of Companies for its efforts saying: “I am told Jospong Group of Companies agreed to complete the project as a Corporate Social Responsibility at no cost to the Ghana Armed Forces. Jospong, well done, ayekoo!!”
For that reason, he stated that the edifice is named the “Joseph Siaw Agyepong Young Soldiers Block, “after the Executive Chairman and Founder of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong.
According to the President, the project formed part of the Phase 1 and 2 of the Barracks Regeneration and the Military Housing Projects in 2020 and 2021 respectively all of which are aimed at providing decent accommodation for the military.
The Defense Minister, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, said one of the major challenges facing GAF was accommodation, and therefore appealed for assistance.
Earlier, in a brief remark, the Executive Chairman of the JGC, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, expressed his profound gratitude to the Military High Command for the opportunity to support a worthy cause.
He indicated that the Group sees the gesture as an opportunity to contribute their quota through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to an institution as important as the Ghana Army.
He said Jospong Group supports institutions whose mission resonates with the corporate mission of JGC which is to improve lives people in the society.
According to Dr. Siaw Agyepong, his organization has enjoyed a good collaboration with the Armed Forces as their Senior Executives, Young Executives, drivers and operatives of Ecozoil have benefitted from the rich expertise from various outlets of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“This is indeed my personal admiration for the military for the mark of discipline, professionalism and excellence”, he underscored.
“I am inspired by what I am witnessing here today and this has further reinforced the company’s resolve to continue to contribute our widow’s might to the 37 Military Hospital in other areas of interest which they wish to embark on,” Dr Siaw Agyepong said.
Also present at the event were the Military High Command, The Interior Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery, Hon Kennedy Agyepong, Directors from the Ministry of Defense and executives of the Jospong Group.
The construction was undertaken by Georotche a subsidiary of FEDEMS Group. Jospong Group is a conglomerate of over 60 companies headquartered in Ghana , with operations in other African countries such as Zambia, Togo, Angola and Sierra Leone. The Group is into Waste management and allied services, automobile and equipment, logistics and construction, manufacturing, banking and insurance, Media and agriculture and agribusiness among others. The Group’s latest interest is into rice production to feed the West African sub region.
